How Much SEO Do You Need To Get Top Rankings?

Perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions, perpetuated by industry SEO experts, is that a website must follow perfect SEO strategies to get top rankings. While adhering to simple common SEO standards does help the search engines both find and index your site more quickly, it doesn't guarantee by any stretch of the imagination that following those SEO guidelines will propel your site to the top of the rankings.

If only search engine optimization was that easy!

No doubt, there are some SEO faux pas that will do harm to your site's rankings, especially in Google, the ultimate hall-monitor all puffed up and ready to pounce on any misbehaving webmaster. Things such as keyword stuffing, keyword spamming or linking out to bad neighborhoods such as link farms, pharmaceutical or gambling sites may get you blacklisted.

But how much SEO do you need? How much search engine optimization do you need to get top rankings? Do you need a whole lot or do you need very little SEO?

Actually, after 10 years of marketing online, the answer to that question varies depending upon what you're trying to accomplish with your SEO efforts? If you're operating an online business in a very competitive (read lucrative) market, SEO will be high on your agenda as you go about annihilating your competition.

Even if you're an ordinary webmaster or website owner you're probably fussing over your rankings in the search engines. The higher the rankings you achieve for your chosen keywords; the more traffíc you will get. Good quality traffic that converts well into loyal subscribers and fans of your site.

Many webmasters and companies spend thousands of dollars each month in order to get their keywords and sites up to the top of the líst. If you're into affiliate marketing, your daily income will rise and fall almost parallel to your rankings. Now, if my earnings go up, I know automatically my rankings have gone up, usually in Google. If my earnings go down, I know my rankings have gone south. Some times even a drop or rise of one place on the first page SERPs will affect how much you earn.

Obviously, because of this fact, SEO or how well I am optimized for the search engines is extremely important to me. I am constantly building quality links and quality content for my sites. Some keyword battles you win, some battles you lose. I have been fighting some keyword battles for over 3 or 4 years now!

But how much SEO is enough? How much SEO should you do with your sites? Many webmasters make sure all their on page set-up or lay-out is done exactly to what the SEO experts say you should do. This is not a bad idea. Make sure your Title, URL, Headlines, Keyword Density... are all laid out right. These are things we can control and adjust to meet the SEO standards.

Other SEO or ranking factors are much harder to predict, many of them are simply out of our control. How other sites link to us, what they put in the anchor text, what they say about us... simply things we can't control.

I believe the over-riding reason why your site is listed at the top of any rankings has to do with the number, the quality and the quantity of sites linking back to your page. The higher the number of related quality one-way links you have flowing back to your site, the higher it will perform in the rankings. Your anchor text is very important (underlined part of a link); it must contain your keywords or variations of it. The content on the linking page should also be related to your chosen keywords.

Get this part right and you will get high rankings.

Or at least this has been my experience - all the other ranking factors do count but this is the over-riding factor in my opinion.

Another major ranking factor lately, has been the importance Google is placing on social media links. Get your content to the first page of Digg with lots of diggs and it will rank high in Google. This is not surprising when you consider the nature of these social bookmarking sites... it really is an actual "vote" for the quality of your content. Getting Delicious bookmarks has a similar positive effect.

Another prominent factor, from my observations, is having your major keyword in your Domain Name. Use hyphens if you want but having those keywords in there, does help rather than hinder your rankings.

Now if you're wondering about how Google ranks pages or your keywords.... Google has around 200 ranking factors (with filters and penalties thrown in to make all our lives interesting) which it uses to rank your keywords/pages. Now the question still remains, how much SEO do you need? How much time should you spend at optimizing, building links, worrying your head off over the latest Google Itch?
Forget Expensive PPC Advertising - There is an Alternative!

The answer always comes back to quality content. Create a site that has quality content and the SEO will take care of itself. People will link to your site, you will get bookmarks in all the social media sites, Google will find your content and rank it. Your SEO will grow naturally as your site grows. Keep building more pages, keep targeting more and more related keywords in your niche or subject area and you will get higher rankings.

Now, of course, some webmasters are a little more aggressive in how quickly they want their rankings to rise to the top of the search engines. Here's something you can do if you want to go into the SEO battle full-force.

1. Download SEOquake and place this free SEO toolbar plug-in on your Firefox (or I.E.) browser.

2. Go to Google and type in the keyword or keyword phrase you're targeting with your site or content.

3. Select the number one ranking and observe how many pages it has indexed, PageRank, how many backlinks it has, age of the site... and so on.

4. Then use the page info button and study all the on-page factors this site has and notice what it's doing with its page and keyword density lay-out.

5. Check all the backlinks this site has in the different search engines. Copy or try to get the same backlinks for your site that your competitor has acquired. Then get more backlinks and/or higher quality backlinks than your competitor.

6. Watch your rankings rise...

Just a few more words of wisdom and we're done. Some battles will be too tough to fight, the competition will be so stiff you just can't compete. Other battles will take a long time; months, even years before you rise to the top. Your best bet is to choose long-tail (multi-worded) keywords that have little or no competition. You can rise to the top within days, even hours. The sweet thing is this: long-tail keywords are often the most lucrative and bring in the most sales. For in the final analysis, you just don't want SEO, you want smart SEO. And you will quickly learn, most times you can often out-smart your competition, even if you can't out-rank them.

Beyond the horrid grammar and sales copy, the thing that jumped out madly at me was the bit about “Google latest methodology called LSI”. My friends, if you EVER get emails from SEOs using this little catch phrase… you know you’re in the wrong place. Actually if you’re considering hiring an SEO, ask them about LSI…. If they in any way infer that it is part of the Google process…. BAM… file them away.

You see, this is what I call the LSI Bandwagon effect (read that post for more). While search engine obviously use semantic technologies, there is no evidence Google is using that one and SEOs that state otherwise are doing nothing more than mythology regurgitation.

Another golden turd that I hate seeing offered by any search optimizer service “Submission to Search Engines and Directories” – while I am still mildly partial to using directory submissions, (quality over quantity, right?) the whole submit to search engines is bad ju ju.

Sure, it’s great for noob webmasters when they first come on the scene, but considering that indexation is greatly reliant on links, the link building portion of the program will naturally take care of this. While it cannot hurt to submit to search engines, it will not ensure any meaningful rankings.. so professional SEOs should not be offering this service.

All of this made me think of a tune…

And so my friends please do be careful out there. What if they had a slick presentation, more polished and refined? How would one know? You ultimately need to learn the essentials of SEO to even hire one. Back in the 80’s there were far more complaints about home renovators than there is today. Why is that? In no small measure the explosion of home renovation television shows and home videos quickly delivered a higher level of education to home owners than ever before.

This is turn help to weed out the less than reputable contractors as they had a hard time even finding work.

How To Use The Q.S.E. Process To Create And Sell High Priced Programs

How would you like to be able to increase each and every sale by a factor of 10 times to 100 times? As a leader in the field of creating high end programs, an important key is to strategically position yourself among your ideal clients as their only option.

The Q.S.E. Process is an important method to ensure that you are drawing your ideal clients to you. First know, that there are only two ways to compete in the market place: price or value. A friend and client of mine found out the hard way that not competing on price requires some strategic thinking.

Thom who is a personal trainer found it difficult to book clients in the new gym he was training at. He would go around and help potential clients, showing them how to use the equipment properly. In his free time he spent time educating them on a program they should be following after chatting with them on their goals.

Potential clients were very excited to be receiving this attention, especially for free, and were very interested in working with Thom as their trainer. Thom would have his appointment book on him, and would open it up to a blank calendar and tell his clients to choose a time that would be ideal for them. What Thom found is that the excitement that clients had to work with him quickly faded and they began to 'hum and ha' when it came to making a commitment. Those who did sign up seldom showed up for their appointments to train with Thom.

Thom wondered why. He had the most personal training education in his gym and work-out enthusiasts were excited about working with him after talking with him for a few minutes and realizing his vast amount of knowledge. However, as soon as he opened his training book their excitement turned to hesitation.

Within some strategic thinking, Thom was able to fill his calendar full within 30 days. What he did is follow the Q.S.E. Process.

First of all, he quickly filled his calendar to provide only a few times that he would be available in the coming week. This appearance of a full calendar NOW had potential clients clamoring for his time and honoring their commitments to showing up. Soon he was not only the busiest trainer in his city, but he began to win awards for bringing in the most business to his gym.

Here is what you need to know about translating the 'full work out' appointment book principle into your business. Follow the Q.S.E. Process. It will work for you no matter what, whether you are a struggling entrepreneur or a new entrepreneur. If your desire is to create and sell the most expensive programs in your niche, here is what you must know right now:

You must set up a qualification (Q) process. We are conditioned that anything worth having or accomplishing is intertwined with an application process. Position your value in light of a qualification process that showcases to potential clients that they are selected to work with you. They should see having access to you as a privilege. In this way, you can eliminate all the potential clients who want you to compete on price.

By the way, an interesting fact that I have seen coming from over 1,800 video case studies, is this: the biggest successes with clients have come with those who have invested the most. Why is this? Subconsciously there is a greater buy-in when someone makes a significant investment. It is interesting to note too that most people who want to invest in your highest end programs will consider you not good enough if you are too cheap. They will think that you really do NOT bring good value to the market place if there is not a significant investment?

Secondly, you must be seen as the standard (S) of your market place. In every discipline today there exists a set of standards that allow for people to speak and communicate properly. For example, when you fill up your car you expect that a gallon of gasoline is the same as a gallon of gasoline in every other state or country. All fields have standards including the fields of Mathematics, Science and Medicine for example. In each of these disciplines a set of standards exist or that discipline cannot exist.

As someone interested in creating and selling high priced programs, there is a strategic way of creating this standardization. This begins with your ability to control the conversation that your would-be clients are having. You must become the person that influences their silent Q&A Session. How do you do this?

This begins by knowing the critical questions that your target market should be asking in order to solve their problems properly. These are not the questions that they think they should be asking, but the ones that they should be asking. The key to being the standard, and to increase your value instantly, is have the fortitude of character to tell your potential clients that before they go with anyone in your industry, here are the critical questions that they should be asking of them. By appearing objective, you in effect position yourself as the standard of your niche market.

By using the Socratic Method of questioning, you provide your target market powerful 'Ah Ha' moments. When you are able to begin to influence how clients should be seeing their problems you position yourself strategically as the standard of you industry. Would-be clients will think, "If I have already been educated more profoundly than I have ever been before by merely the questions that I should be asking "imagine what this person is able to do for me!"

Finally, you must be the source of education (E) for your target market. What does this look like? Here are three guidelines. First, you must position your company to out- educate your competitors. This begins by controlling the conversation that they should be having as I have just stated. Your education should involve 'moving the free line' so that you can showcase in case study format what you do to solve problems.

Secondly, case studies provide you powerful leverage in building the correct context for delivering your content. It is one thing to teach content. It is quite another to do it in the context of real people who represent your ideal clients.

Thirdly, the most powerful way to educate your target market is to customize your education. You have no doubt noticed the abundance of PPC ads when you're online. And when you perform a search on most search engines, there are tons of links at the top or side of the results list that are different from the rest.

What differentiates these ads from each other? What costs more? What offers the best results? The answers are in the testing of your particular ad. Nothing more, nothing less. Don't let anyone else fool you.

You bid to have your site link displayed on the results page for that particular keyword search. Depending on the search engine you use, either the highest bid or the best performing link will be displayed first on the page.

You pay the amount of your bid every time someone is directed to your website by clicking on the advertised link. It doesn't get any more straightforward than that.

The cost of Pay per Click advertising

Depending on the search engine you use, you may have an initial deposit when you open your Pay per Click account of around $50, and a minimum monthly spend of around $20. Your bid amounts will depend on your chosen keywords.

The bidding system means that the more popular keywords will end up being very expensive. Keep a careful record of what you are spending on PPC advertising as the costs can quickly mount up and you can end up paying more than you are making.

Researching Your Keywords

Do this correctly and you'll be able to drive hoards of very targeted visitors to your sites instantly.

Here's a method you could use to discover the ads that are working and where to put your ads.

Type in one of your best keywords into search and look at both the natural results that come up as well as the paid results that appear.

Visit the top 10 - 20 sites that come up in the natural results and see if they also have google ads on them. If so - you should copy and paste those urls in a notepad or doc for your natural search research, I'll explain why shortly. Only write down the urls that also have google ads on them.

Then take a look at the top and right side paid results and either take a screen shot or just copy and paste the ads into a notepad. This will be your paid ad research notes.

Do the above for as many keywords are you want to use yourself for your ppc campaigns.

Now, come back the next day and do the same process on the same keywords. Do this daily or maybe every couple of days if you like over a period of several weeks.

What are you looking for? You are looking for consistencies.

First of all, keep your eye on the natural search results if those same top 10-20 website urls keep appearing everytime in the same order or if they are changing. Reason is sometimes a site can get ranked #1 or #2 for a keyword right away but then dropped down after a few days or weeks.

What you want to find are the sites that have good page rank and are consistent with natural search results for your keywords. Now what you want to do is go into your Google Adwords account and set up a campaign - simple yes? But here's the key, instead of just setting up a campaign in niche market categories you are going to set up campaigns where you control the exact url your ad will be shown on.

Following me where this is going? Remember that list of natural search result that also display Google ads you have? Now is the time to use it. You simply use the Google Adword options to set up specific urls for your ad. Not just the domain but the exact url which could be an inner page with content directly related to your keyword.

Now your ads will only be shown on highly targeted content pages that you control. Meaning you now have highly targeted ads set up and if they are on very popular sites such as say CNN,, or the New York Times etc you could instantly send hundreds or even thousands of visitors to your sites.

Now, part 2, back to those paid ad research results you have jotted down in your notepad. Again, you are looking for consistent ads which keep appearing all the time for your keywords. Most likely those ads are profitable (unless the owner just likes losing money or something) so you could model your own ads after those that seem to be working well.

Just change the niche words around and more than likely you can use very similar phrases in your ads. By doing this you are setting your ads up for potentially higher click thrus.

Doing this along with the targeted ad campaigns and you can be sure to expect some heavy traffic to your sites.

Side note: While the description text you use for general SEO is designed to get as much traffic to your site as possible, your description text for PPC advertising has a different purpose. Because you are paying for each visitor, you want to make sure that only people who are likely to join your membership site actually click on the link. Your description will make it very clear what your site is about to attract the visitors that are most likely to generate revenue for you.

Make sure you test, track, and reevaluate. One campaign may not generate the results that you like, but another may. Keep track of not only the clicks that you receive but the actual purchases from those clicks, that is where the real power is.

There are plenty of good people looking for work. What turns these good workers into great employees?

Motivation. All a manager needs to do then is uncover what motivates their employees. For the sake of simplicity, let's say motivation is a collection of learned attitudes and beliefs that energizes your behaviors, defines your values, and shapes your personality.

Mismatching employees to the wrong jobs places managers and employees at opposite ends of a motivational tug of war. These mismatches just sap the life out of the workforce and the soul out of the culture. What are the most common motivational mismatches and hiring mistakes that managers make?

Mismatch of behavioral style. Behavioral styles predict no more and no less than how an individual will perform in the workplace. It doesn't predict success or competence but the way people will respond to (or ignore) problems, people, pace of the environment and procedures. Mismatches between job and personal styles and inter-personal styles don't necessarily guarantee failure but do ensure that stress and conflict will eventually show its ugly and costly face. How an individual learns to adapt and a manager learns to respond ultimately determines if harnessing the energy of behavioral style will boom or doom performance.

Mismatch of values. While people can learn to adapt behavioral styles, adjusting personal values, or motivators, is not so easy. Selecting individuals who are motivated by the job and/or company culture is just one way to make sure employees expend their energy on productivity not conflict.

Mismatch of personality. At the core of every human being are key personality traits that determine how people respond to competition, initiative, conflict, flexibility, traditions and organizational policy, large groups of people, mental toughness, curiosity and more. Research shows that these traits predispose many workers toward a "natural" competence in areas such as drive for results, follow-through, detail-orientation, planning and organizing, interpersonal skills and stress management. Mismatches between a proven "best-fit" profile for the job and the individual in the job leads to significantly higher incidences of turnover, poor performance and stress.

What's a manager to do? The answer is quite simple. Understanding what motivates an employee can take hours if not days of observation and interviews. Even then the results might be unpredictable and suspect. Behavioral and personality assessments, on the other hand, take just a few minutes for a candidate or employee to complete. Once in the hands of a manager, these reports can help take the guesswork out of engaging and motivating employees.
