Environmentally Friendly Business Practices

by Andy Keeler

Instituting environmentally friendly practices does not mean sacrificing your competitive edge. Business owners are realizing that they can make a bigger impact by changing their business policies than by changing their personal behavior, and this has lead to a change in corporate culture over the last few years that has resulted in a notable environmental impact.

In the past, efforts to institute eco-friendly business practices were admirable, but these efforts appear negligible compared to the changes that are being made today. Minimizing the consumption of paper products and electricity are still effective ways for companies to save money and help the environment at the same time, but many companies are stepping outside these standardized boundaries to effect big changes.

Many companies are choosing to enact organization-wide policies that take enormous effort and patience, and the results of these efforts are just now filtering in. Leaving the choice in the hands of consumers often results in poor choices, but when companies choose to be careful about what they produce and how they produce it, the impact can be tremendous.

In the Great Lakes area of the United States and Canada, wind energy is becoming an increasingly viable source of power for companies of all sizes. Wind powered electricity costs only slightly more than standard electricity for the consumer, and many conscientious business owners are willing to pay the premium. For the producers of electricity, using wind power makes sense as a way to help reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Reducing dependence on one commodity allows the producers to further diversify and create a more sustainable financial future for their company. Thus, both the producers and consumers of wind powered electricity benefit from the creation of this clean, environmentally friendly energy source.

Pascale Engineering, a producer of portable trade show displays and trade show flooring in the Great Lakes area, has completely converted to the use of wind powered electricity in its state-of-the-art production facility. In addition to being totally wind powered, Pascale Engineering produces recycled and recyclable trade show displays that are quickly making their way into the market. These displays give exhibitors nationwide a green alternative in their trade show marketing campaign, which only serves to further the environmental goals of many companies.

End users are virtually unaware of the progress made by Pascale Engineering, as they notice no difference in cost. In fact, the Exhibit One Display System line or products produced by Pascale Engineering has seen a marketable increase in quality with no increase in cost. Thanks to research into lighter weight plywood materials, the Exhibit One product line has become more durable and more lightweight. This saves end users huge amounts of money in shipping costs each year, and increases their overall satisfaction with the product. In an effort to make their production process cause less waste, many products within the Exhibit One line use the exact same component pieces. In fact, the entire Exhibit One line can now be produced from a catalog consisting of less than a hundred parts. This means that if exhibitors want to upgrade their trade show display package, they do not always need to purchase new components, as the parts can simply be rearranged in many cases. This saves exhibitors enormous amounts of money each year. Positive environmental change does not always have to be associated with negative economic impact.

Simple changes in business practices and purchasing can make an enormous impact on the environment, and the cost of the choices is usually minimal or non-existent. Whether or not you believe that carbon emissions are the culprit behind our increasingly unstable global climate, there are simple changes that can be made that would make a big impact on the health of our planet.

Money and Decisions

by Kaya Singer

Everyday there are decisions on whether you will buy this or pay for that. How do you make decisions such as, "should I rebuild my website, '" or " should I hire an assistant?" Is the answer based on fear of not having enough money or is it based on a clear vision of your business and a business plan that maps out how and what needs to happen to allow your business to grow? Small business owners are notorious for making decisions for their business based on cash flow.

One of my clients recently said, "It is all a risk. How do I know if this new idea is worth funding?" What's true is that if you didn't want any risk you would still have a job that pays you a steady and consistent paycheck. You would know exactly how much you would get every two weeks. In a small business it is different. In order to minimize the risk, you make projections based on a plan. The plan is based on a vision and a map of where you want to go and how you plan to get there. Once you know your plan, there are certain things you have to spend money on in order to make it happen. Hiring people to help you, setting up an e-commerce website or joining a networking group are all things that could help move your business forward if you do your homework and are willing to take the risk now for the benefit later.

A woman I worked with last year gave up her steady corporate paycheck, put out a shingle for her new consulting business and expected money to begin rolling in right away. She didn't want to borrow any money so the stress began around how to get more clients. Poor decisions then followed around spending money on her business. She didn't want to spend any money until she was earning more. It's the chicken or the egg thing. She decided to not join the chamber, not take a small business seminar and not build a better website. This is a trap that many self employed people fall into. It could be that the new website or seminar is exactly what she needed to help grow her business but her fear took over.

Answer these few questions as a self assessment. There are no right answers. It is only for self awareness.

1. Is your main focus on attracting more clients or is on setting up systems that will make your business more sustainable?

2. Are your money decisions based on cash flow or your business plan?

3. If you could instantly put more money into your business where would it go and why?

I have also seen many people begin a business and spend money incorrectly at first because of not having a clear plan and enough information. It is a fine balance but I have never heard of a successful new business that has not had to spend money first. Building your business is an investment whereas working for someone else is only a job.

Do you know Lithium-ion battery is safe(1)?

by mary lv

Do you know Lithium-ion battery is safe(1)? Do you know Lithium-ion battery is safe(1)? Lithium-ion holds twice the energy of a nickel-based battery and four-times that of lead acid. Lithium-ion is a low maintenance system, an advantage that most other chemistries cannot claim. There is no memory and the battery does not require scheduled cycling to prolong its life. Nor does lithium-ion have the sulfation problem of lead acid that occurs when the battery is stored without periodic topping charge. Lithium-ion has a low self-discharge and is environmentally friendly. Disposal causes minimal harm. With the high usage of lithium-ion in cell phones, digital cameras and laptops, there are bound to be issues. A one-in-200,000 failure rate triggered a recall of almost six million lithium-ion packs used in laptops manufactured by Dell and Apple. Heat related battery failures are taken very seriously and manufacturers chose a conservative approach. The decision to replace the batteries puts the consumer at ease and lawyers at bay. Let's now take a look at what's behind the recall. more

Top 5 Red Flags of Bad MLM Companies

by Ben Blackburn

In a previous blog, I discussed the difference between legitimate multi level marketing companies and “pyramid schemes.” Whether you like it or not, there is a difference. However, I would like to go in to more detail on that subject and discuss the “red flags” that indicate a business that is inevitably going to leave you high and dry with nothing to show for it but a butt load of products you will never use and a group of friends that doesn’t want to hang out with you anymore. Let’s face it: your friends are not going to want to talk to you after you recruit them into a business that fails.

Without and further ado, here are the top five ways you can tell if a company is really just a disguised pyramid scheme:

5. There is a large fee to “get your business started.” If they are making money by having you help them sell legitimate products, then they shouldn’t be asking for a bunch of money from you BEFORE you even start selling products. Their revenue is coming from the wrong place.

4. You are promised that you can make a lot of money without doing a lot of work. There are of course things that you can do to make money without having to work all that hard. For example, you could be a professional athlete. But, it’s just not possible for EVERYONE who joins a business to be able to make so much money without working. Making money takes work. End of story.

3. You are encouraged to make purchases to advance your status rather than making sales. Often times MLM companies want you to think that making purchases for products within the company is a form of “investment.” They would also have you think that making purchases will help you grow your business. If it were possible to make money by simply buying products and doing nothing else, don’t you think everybody would do that?

2. Income projections are particularly high. Many companies love emphasizing how much you will make, but rarely mention how you are going to make it. MLM opportunities have proven historically to be little better than a side income at best for most people. If you are told that you can expect to “fire your boss” by next month, they are probably just trying to get you hyped up about the business so you will fork over your money in hopes of future riches.

1. You make more money from recruiting than you do from selling products. If they would rather have you recruit another distributor than a new customer, then their products are not what is driving the company. Companies that are really successful are those that sell PRODUCTS, not so-called business opportunities. A company that is filled up with people but no products is still just a group of people, not a thriving company.

So there you have it. After years of investigating MLM companies, this is what I have come up with. There are of course many other things that I could have written about, but I chose to focus on these. I will go into detail on these things in later posts.

Working Class Hero

by Mark Barton

Finding that perfect business can be very hard at times. It seems like today in our fast growing economy everybody wants to be an entrepreneur or some type of small business owner. I can remember conversations with belated co workers of mine who always complained about the work conditions at the job. Everyday the topic of getting a raise would come up. Most people thought that getting that 5% increase would be the end all of their financial problems. Well it wasn't nor will it ever be.

Being proactive to financial freedom is not enough. We also need to deal with the reactive side of the spectrum. Both these element must come into balance in order for us to obtain habits of financial success. Most people who work jobs never reach this level of the playing field. They are content with the daily grind of their familiar Social Structure. If this sounds like you then this article may not be for you. If you are looking forward to the next company picnic then this may not be for you either.

Truly getting out of the rat race involves you being the source of your cheese not XYZ Widget Company. When we work as employees we tend to make friends and meet new people. There is nothing wrong with this because we are social creatures by nature. Everybody in some innate way has a sense of belonging. We often join Churches, Civic Organizations and Gangs to fulfill this basic need. Ask yourself these question next time company XYZ Widget gives you a $20 gift card for Christmas. Does my employer really care about me? Do I want to continue these routines for 20yrs or more? Can working here truly make me financially free? Are any of my co worker becoming more reactive to their financial freedom? Is my job my life?

There is a parable in the bible when Jesus said "to be in the world but not of the world". I hold this also to be true for various work environments. This simple parable can be empowering enough to move you in the direction of things you truly deserve in life i.e. Spending time with you family and loved ones, Having no cap on your annual income, Having a social network of friends who are ambitious about financial freedom like you. If we truly want financial freedom we may have to sacrifice getting our picture posted in the Human Resource section as the infamous Employee of the Month. You can start now by learning to be more reactive.

Financial Success is only a few steps away for those who truly want it. Their is no competition only creativity. Use your creative minds to create the world you want to be in not the world you have to be in. The job site is only an invisible day cage that you can escape from at any time. Why not use your creative mind to create riches for yourself. The possibilities are endless.

Internet Marketing Strategy - Reviewing your business plan

by Deanna Mascle

It is essential for your business that you have a route map which shows exactly how you will achieve your business goals. Without a plan you are planning to fail.

The plan that you develop needs to be a living document that is constantly checked and updated. If not done on a regular basis then there is really no point in generating it in the first place. It is critically important that you know that you are actually achieving the plan. If not, then you will need to adjust the plan to accommodate any revisions that occur.

The very basics in a good business plan is to detail the tasks and systems that you will use to progress the plan. You will need to review your plan on a monthly basis initially to ensure progress is being made as planned. You may choose to change the frequency of the review at a later stage when the initial kinks have been ironed out and the planned progress is being achieved.

The initial goals in the plan are usually small in terms of financial profits, but it is just as important that they be achieved on schedule as the larger goals that occur at a later date. Proving that the plan is working effectively in the early stages is essential in demonstrating that the overall plan is achievable. So, check that every detail of your plan is being achieved.

Not everything works out as planned, so you must find out the answers to the following questions:

1. - Did you achieve the financial goals for the period within the timeframe allocated? Maybe you achieved some, but not all of them.

2. - Did the systems that you used to complete the tasks work well? Maybe some worked very well, but others were not so successful.

Analyse the answers that you obtain. For those systems that worked successfully, continue working with them for the future tasks. For those items that did not meet the targets set it will be necessary to evaluate why they did not work effectively. What went wrong? Was the system used flawed? What did you need to do to actually complete the task? You will need to adjust future tasks of the same type to accommodate the revised procedure adopted.

Continuous improvement is essential in a good business plan. Adjusting and tweaking the elements within the future plan based on your experience can only improve the effectiveness of the plan and generate confidence that it can be achieved. Plan your work and work your plan and you will be well on the way to achieving your goals.

To Rent or To Buy ???" That Is The Question

by Altaf Sahibzada

There seems to be no end to this debate. There are critics on both sides of this question. Most of the debate revolves round the financial aspects of purchasing a house. The usual factors affecting a decision are the price, the carrying costs, availability of loan, affordability of mortgage and prospects of appreciation.

In addition to the monetary side of a housing project, there is a personal thing involved as well in a private decision. Many a times people purchase houses not because of the financial considerations, but due to aesthetic reasons. It is understandable that any house which is not purchased primarily for investment purposes has to come up to the expectations of the buyers. This should meet their requirements as regards space, tastes, features, location and of course the affordability.

If someone is buying a house for investment purposes only, monetary criteria are important and the overall benefit-cost analysis has to be positive in order to justify this type of investment. However, when a house is bought essentially for living purposes, one cannot put a dollar value of each aspect of a house. It may not only be hard but also improper to measure every feature associated with house in monetary terms.

Many other considerations matter in the purchase of a house. This includes the convenience and location of a house, the comforts, the psychological factor, the pride of ownership, a feeling of belonging, privacy and security, environmental aspects, private swimming and sauna facilities, gardening possibilities, friendly neighborhood and the like. Most of these are non-monetary factors.

However, the negative factors are need for time to look after the maintenance of the house, recurring repairs, hassles of dealing with so many utility companies, arrangements for private security or security alarms, basement leakages, increasing carrying costs and property taxes, changing neighborhoods etc.

On the monetary side, one big aspect is the building of equity in the house. As the time goes by, people tend to accumulate equity in houses which ultimately becomes a retirement nest for many people. If a house has many positive features, a house may bring him a large fortune to any owner over time due to appreciation etc.

One thing is there. Historically over a long period of time very rarely can any one lose money on a house. There are cycles over which the prices of housing properties vary. There may be periods of high prices as we are seeing now or slumps. However, a history of the housing prices over the past century or half a century has shown a constant price increase. There is just an upward trend in housing prices. So if one wants to buy a house at any time and is hoping to keep it for a long time, it is very likely that that house would appreciate, speaking historically.

On the other hand while renting, one is free from a large number of hassles associated with the ownership f a house.

There has also been a debate between the votaries of equity investment and real estate investment. Many equity analysts show that over a longer period of time investments in stock markets have realized greater returns than any investment in housing. Stocks are also highly liquid than property.

Ultimately any decision in buying a house is an individual decision. It has to match the tastes, circumstances and situations of each individual separately. What may be good for one person any not at all be suitable for another?

Investing Mistakes to Avoid

by Bo Sandkvist

Along the way, you may make a few investing mistakes, however there are big mistakes that you absolutely must avoid if you are to be a successful investor. For instance, the biggest investing mistake that you could ever make is to not invest at all, or to put off investing until later. Make your money work for you â€" even if all you can spare is $20 a week to invest!

While not investing at all or putting off investing until later are big mistakes, investing before you are in the financial position to do so is another big mistake. Get your current financial situation in order first, and then start investing. Get your credit cleaned up, pay off high interest loans and credit cards, and put at least three months of living expenses in savings. Once this is done, you are ready to start letting your money work for you.

Don’t invest to get rich quick. That is the riskiest type of investing that there is, and you will more than likely lose. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it! Instead, invest for the long term, and have the patience to weather the storms and allow your money to grow. Only invest for the short term when you know you will need the money in a short amount of time, and then stick with safe investments, such as certificates of deposit.

Don’t put all of your eggs into one basket. Scatter it around various types of investments for the best returns. Also, don’t move your money around too much. Let it ride. Pick your investments carefully, invest your money, and allow it to grow â€" don’t panic if the stock drops a few dollars. If the stock is a stable stock, it will go back up.

A common mistake that a lot of people make is thinking that their investments in collectibles will really pay off. Again, if this were true, everyone would do it. Don’t count on your Coke collection or your book collection to pay for your retirement years! Count on investments made with cold hard cash instead.

Business Trends On Courting Public Favor And Cyberspace

by Penny Maseko

At first glance, it is a bit surprising when you see how much some powerful and prominent businesses in every community bend every effort to court public favor. Almost any community of significant size in the country has a business section in the paper. And subscribers to the local news see their ability to stay in touch with what the strongest and up and coming businesses in town are doing as an important part of their business awareness.

On the business industry a good reputation means better sales. Public opinion is a funny thing. If a retail company gets a bad reputation in a community, it will have a tremendous impact on their bottom line. But the business that is well regarded at the neighborhood level will be one that sees strong customer loyalty.

A good public image impacts recruitment. When you put an advertisement in the local paper to recruit talent, how you are viewed by those looking for jobs will directly influence if they will respond to your recruitment efforts. Many a business got a bad reputation locally and saw dismal responses to recruitment efforts which can mean a less talented staff and poor performance of the business in general.

Business goes to cyberspace

Of course, the value of the internet for sales and promotions has been well known in the industries that service the youth markets and for the companies dealing with entertainment and the arts. Because the internet is in virtually every home and even now on hand held devices of every description, the access it gives to reach a target market are phenomenal. This explosion of an entirely new marketing model has introduced the world of business to entirely new paradigms of marketing and new ways to achieve greater market penetration and sales. And so any business who has had to get out on cyberspace to keep up with the competition has already had to learn a whole new vocabulary that has grown up around the internet marketing phenomenon. Now terms like "Search Engine Optimization", "Auto responders" and "Viral Marketing" become important and powerful tools to any business that wants to tap the power of the internet to increase sales.

The second wave of businesses that perhaps reluctantly ventured out into cyberspace was traditional retail business that you would not associate with cyberspace at all. This includes sport teams, restaurants and even retail giants such as Wal-Mart and Border's Book Stores.

In that the internet is a phenomenally dynamic place, new ways of reaching our customers change almost annually. Where one year a simple web page may have been sufficient, soon we had to have chat rooms, MySpace pages and YouTube compatibility. Any business that sees these changes as chances to do something new and exciting with their business will be the companies that thrive in this modern world. And, as always, those who do not thrive with change will be destined to be made obsolete by it.

Working As A Home Based Transcriber

by Mario Churchill

When looking for secretarial, data entry or word processing jobs in the newspaper, one may think that typing skills are no longer important, since these jobs are in very short supply. However, there are thousands of people all over the country that are making money through typing. This is because they are home based transcribers. What is a home based transcriber? A home based transcriber is a person who converts audio into a written format. They do all of this through a telecommuting, home based setup, where work is submitted via email or through an FTP on their company's website.

So, how do these lucky individuals land home based transcribing positions? Basically, they type fast, have an eye for detail and keen hearing ability. In fact, of these skills, a keen hearing ability will probably get you further as a home based transcriber than even typing speed. When you hear in a keen way, you must be able to listen to the words that are not being spoken in situations where speakers are mumbling or have heavy accents. You must also be able to figure out what is being said when the audio quality is poor. Additionally, you need to be able to distinguish between different voices. While this may sound easy, when you transcribe long documents that have dozens of speakers, it can be difficult remembering who exactly is speaking, unless they have something about their voice that is prolific.

Home based transcribers must also be very disciplined when it comes to having the drive to continue doing work that can be dry and boring. However, there are some home based transcription jobs that offer a little bit more exciting content. These are usually the ones where home based transcribers must type up court hearings or police correspondence. Dryer jobs are the ones where home based transcribers type up company briefings, certain types of news media and political correspondence.

No education is required to become a home based transcriber, if what is being transcribed is general in nature. If the content is medical, it is recommended a transcriber get a certificate in medical transcription, though it is not required. It also helps if a person has excellent English skills and is generally well-educated. This is because as a home based transcriber you may come across lots of fancy vocabulary and industry jargon.

To find home based transcribing jobs, it is best to search freelancing boards such as Sites like this offer a whole section of contact information for some of the most popular home based transcribing jobs. Alternatively, a person could simply enter "home based transcriber" complete with the quotes into a search engine. The listings that would come up would relate completely to home based transcription, since the quotation marks tell the search engine to exclude any results not relating to it.
